Technical sight of the flute

The flute used today, the so called Boehm flute, is built of three pieces: head joint, middle part and foot.
It is distinguished between C and B foot. The later extends the range to the deep notes and at the same time makes the higher notes respond more easily.

All keys are found on the middle part and on the foot. Both parts are not connected (in contrast to the clarinet for example)
A second characteristic of flutes are the keys. There are closed and ring hole keys. Playing the ring hole keys, you have to close the holes with your fingertips. This way even the flute beginner has to consider the position of his hands very carefully from the beginning. Additionally there are methods to play quarter-tones and glissandi.
Beside there are different arrangements of the keys on the flute. There are offline and online flutes. For the offline flute there is the G-key on a separate axel more closely to the natural position of the hand.
The flute consists of approximately 150 parts: Screws, axels, rings, pads and so on.
Every flute has about 16 tone holes on which there is a so called chimney built on..
The length of the parts is 22 cm (head joint), 35.5 cm (middle part) and 13 cm (foot). The diameter is 19 mm, with a parabolic reduction to 17 mm within the head joint .
A flute made of silver weighs approximately 400 Gramm.
