The flute and her family
The "ordinary" flute is
a soprano instrument.
Another member of
the family of
Boehm flutes
is the piccolo flute.
Normally it's tuning lies
one octave higher
than that of the transverse flute
Sometimes you can
find piccolo flutes
tuned on Des too.

A rarity
is the Piccoletto in
Es. It is another
ca. 2.5 cm shorter
than the piccolo.
Another part
of the family you
will rarely find is
the Flautino in G.
Regarding its length is
somewhere between
the flute
and the piccolo.
Lately this instrument
has been found to be ideal
for younger children
learning to play the
flute.
The Flûte
d'Amour or tenor flute
(both in A and B)
has an old
tradition starting
in 18th century.
More familiar
is the alto flute in G.
Because of the non systematic
naming, this flute
is longer and has a deeper
tuning than the
tenor flute .
Symmetric to the
piccolo there is the
bassflute
tuned exactly
one octave lower
than the regular
flute.
The bass flute
is mostly used in
flute choirs
and in jazz music.
During the
past 10 to 15 years
the Big bass flute
(one octave below
the alto),
the double bass flute
(one octave below
the bass flute) and the
Sub double bass flute
(two octaves below
alto)
were added.
