1720 first flute lessons
1728 first education with
Quantz
His father did not like him
to play music, because he
thought it to be too "effeminate".
So he had to practice
secretly most of the time.
1733 Moving in a
palace of his own (Rheinsberg).
From now on playing freely.
1740 succession to the throne
Setting up of a
court orchestra,
building of a new opera house
in Berlin and employment
of Quantz as teacher,
flutemaker and composer.
Composed about 120
pieces, mostly
for
flute
According to tradition
he was not rhythmically firm.
1780 he had to give up
playing the flute because of
breathing troubles and
missing teeth.
Died on the 17th of August 1786
in Sanssoucci near Potsdam
