Frederic the Great

  • Born on the 24th of January 1712 in Berlin
  • 1720 first flute lessons
  • 1728 first education with Quantz
  • His father did not like him to play music, because he thought it to be too "effeminate". So he had to practice secretly most of the time.
  • 1733 Moving in a palace of his own (Rheinsberg). From now on playing freely.
  • 1740 succession to the throne
  • Setting up of a court orchestra, building of a new opera house in Berlin and employment of Quantz as teacher, flutemaker and composer.
  • Composed about 120 pieces, mostly for flute
  • According to tradition he was not rhythmically firm.
  • 1780 he had to give up playing the flute because of breathing troubles and missing teeth.
  • Died on the 17th of August 1786 in Sanssoucci near Potsdam
