Friedrich Daniel Rudolf Kuhlau

  • Born at the 11th of september 1786 in Uelzen, Hannover
  • Lost one eye by accident, when he was a child.
  • father military musician
  • Lessons for piano and flute, second taught by his father.
  • Later on piano lessons and composition from Schwencke, musical director in Hamburg
  • From 1804 until 1810 living as a pianist and composer in Hamburg
  • 1810 leaving Braunschweig and going to Copenhagen, in order to not have to join the army.
  • 1812 title of chamber musician without a salary
  • 1813 becoming danish citizen.
  • 1814 his parents and his sister follow him to Copenhagen.
  • Because of paying for them, too, Kuhlau was in deep financial problems.
  • In 1814 first release of his first opera
  • 1816-1817 teacher for singing at the Copenhagen theatre
  • 1825 visit to vienna, friendship to Beethoven
  • 1826 movement to the village Lyngby
  • 1828 appointment for being professor
  • Kuhlau was a for many years a good friend of forstenau
  • 1830 death of both parents
  • 1831 the house in Lyngby, Jütland burns down. He lost some of of his manuscripts. A part of them had never been published before.
  • Because of waiting hole of the cold night in front of his burning house, Kuhlau became seriously ill and had to went to hospital about a month later.
  • Death at the 12th of March 1832 in copenhagen
  • His compositions (duets!!!) meant an important upgrade to flute repertoire. Because of that he was called "Beethoven of the flute"
