James Galway (*1939)

Born in Belfast into a family of flutists (father, grandfather and younger brother)
First playing the Tinwhistle, then pan flute and violin and later on flute.
Scholarship for studies at the Royal College of Music with John Francis. After getting to know Bennett he continues at the Guildhall School of Music with Gilbert and at the Paris conservatory with Crunelle
Flutist at Sadler's Wells Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonics
During his studies in Paris he took private lessons from Rampal. Attending courses there was also a great influence from Moyse

Solo flute at the Berliner Philharmoniker
1975
Leaving the orchestra for a solo carreer. In the same year professorship at the Eastman School of Music (only for one year)

Acceptance in the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elisabeth
1989
master class in Luzern (since then each year in Weggis)
1997
First guest conductor of the London Mozart Players
1998
Honorary doctor of the St. Andrews University in Scottland

Nominated Knight Bachelor by Queen Elisabeth
Extension of the repertoire for flute by ordering compositions, for example from Rodrigo, Maazel, Heath, Arnold and editions of other solo works like the four seasons by Vivaldi
