Dies as result of a stroke, without finishing the composition "Kunst der Fuge". The city of Leipzig had already found a successor a year before, when Bach was seriously ill. His death was not of much interest for the people in Leipzig, his widow became very poor following his death.
1829
After his death, his compositions were gradually forgotten. Mendelssohn started a revival by playing the Matthew Passion again.
1843
Mendelssohn donates the first monument for Bach in Leipzig

Das sind die absoluten Standard-Solostücke, all die Werke, die jeder irgendwann mal spielen wird: beide Bachs, Sequenza, Fukushima, Marais. Gespielt von einem der ganz großen. War eine meiner allerersten Flöten-CDs überhaupt. Fast ein Stückchen Flötengeschichte und in jedem Fall ein würdiges Objekt für das CD-Regal jedes Flötisten.
