Professorship at the Royal Northern College of Music (1957-1969), at the Trinity College (1947-1969) and at the Guildhall School of Music (1948-1969)
Gilbert was one of the first British flutist using a silver flute, motivated by lessons from Leroy and recordings of Moyse
