Born in Hukvaldy (Northern Moravia), being fifth child of nine of a teacher and cantor
1865
First musical education from Pavel Krizkovsky at the boarding school. Four years choirboy at the monastery of Altbrünn. After eight years he becomes teacher there.
1869
Studies at the Czech teacher school
1874
Studies at Prague organ school.
1876
After one year in Prague return to Brünn as head of the philharmony. First compositions.
1877
Walking tours with Dvorak
1879
Five months of studies at Leipzig conservatory
1880
Two months of studies at Vienna conservatory
1881
Foundation of a organ school in Brünn as a branch of Pragu conservatory
Made first a name in collecting folk tunes and in conserving those songs.
1916
Breakthrought with his opera Jenufa
1924

The idea for writing this music was given during a visit in Sanssoucic there the images of Frederic the Great lead to an association with military structures and piccolo flutes
