Biography of Jose Maria del Carmen Ribas (1796-1885)

Born in Burgos, son of a bandmaster of an infantry regiment
Learns in early years to play flute, oboe and clarinet from his father
Clarinet player at the army, taken prisoner by the French and being freed by the British he served afterwards under Wellington and took part at the battle of Toulouse.
First flutist of Lisbon Opera
1825
Moves to Britain because some priests in his home town posted his name as that of a recalcitrant
1835
Second flutist of King´s Theatre in London
1837
After the death of Nicholsons he becomes principal flutist.
07.08.1851
Very successful farewell concert in London
Concert tour through Spain and Portugal
1853
Settles in Oporto and gives lessons
1861
He dies in July in Oporto
